Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why should I use an Independent Educational Consultant (IEC)?

IEC’s are trained professionals with a wide variety of experience to helps families and their children take the stress out of the application process. As members of IECA, HECA and NACAC, IEC’s work on behalf of the student to make sure they are focused in their approach to applying to school.

How is an IEC different from a school-based counselor?

School based counselors have lots of students to work with and many other things they need to do during their work day. Most schools have high student to counselor ratios, around 150:1. It can be a challenge to create a personalized plan even for the best of school-based counselors. There just is not enough time.

IEC’s work only with their students so they can individualize the process to each student.  Every student is unique and we can tap into that uniqueness.

Should I contact or work with an Agent?

Agents can be good and they can be bad. Sometimes it is hard to know the difference particularly if they are making promises about what they can do. IEC’s do not guarantee admission to any school; they are not worried about commissions or quotas. They work for you.

IEC’s who belong to IECA, HECA and NACAC must follow the guidelines of respected counselors around the world.

What does an IEC really do?

An IEC works with you and for you. They create an individualized plan to help you sort through all the information involved in finding your next school. They have the tools and the knowledge to help you demystify the research and application process. Since they know schools – boarding schools and high schools they frequently advise students on how to improve in school and their personal lives to help them maximize their potential. Finally, IEC’s help you own the process. You do the work, set the targets and your consultant helps you reach those goals by advising and coaching.

What are the fees for hiring an IEC?

Typically IEC’ charge by the hour or by a comprehensive contract which includes are wide variety of services. Fees vary by what you need. But there are no hidden costs or different fees based on the schools you get in to. All fees are standard based on the amount of expertise you need.
